Dancing rally to stop the relocation of Tsukiji Fish Market

On August 20th, a dancing rally was held in the busy streets of Shinjuku, Tokyo.
There were only seventy participants, but the rally caught the attention of the passers-by. The action called for the stop of the relocation of the Tsukiji Fish Market, which is scheduled for November 7th. The new Tokyo Governor, KOIKE Yuriko, was in the process of re-examining the relocation of the Market. (She announced the postponement of the relocation on August 31st ) Japan Communist Party Diet Member, KIRA Yoshiko, made a speech at the rally, “I have a baby under the age of one. I cannot give the baby a fish served from a market contaminated with benzene. Many sales brokers in the market are against the relocation. I hope the new Governor keeps her campaign pledge to stop the relocation.” NAKAZAWA Makoto, the president of the Tsukiji Market Workers’ Union, said, “The problem is not only the contamination. The plan was questionable from the beginning and now it’s clear to everyone.” The participants were resolute to protect the Tsukiji Fish Market, which is a cultural asset of Japan. (M)
