Youths who fought for social change – Documentary film “The Fall of Icarus: Narita Stories”

 

 I saw a film “The Fall of Icarus: Narita Stories” directed by DAISHIMA Haruhiko on September 9, 2017 in Shibuya, Tokyo. All the 70 seats in the theatre were full. About two thirds of the audience were supposedly those who actually know the struggle in Narita, but still there were quite a few young people, making me feel a little happy. KASE Tsutomu in the film suddenly started to talk, “We thought that society would change and that we would be able to change it”. He has continued the struggle against Narita Airport to date as a farmer and activist. A large photo of Zhou Enlai, the former leader of the revolution in China, is raised at his house. Following the Chinese revolution in 1949, the Vietnam revolution was consolidated in 1975. At that time, we tried to carry out a revolution also here in Japan. (KUGE Itaru)

社会変革を夢見て闘った若者たち～ドキュメンタリー映画『三里塚のイカロス』

代島治彦監督作品『三里塚のイカロス』を、封切りの９月９日、京都の片田舎から上

京して渋谷のシアター・イメージフォーラムで見た。土曜日の午後、７０席のミニシ

アターは満席になり、補助椅子が用意された。３分の２ほどは、あの時代を同時代に

経験した世代と思われる男女だが、しゃれた服を着た若い人たちも結構たくさんい

て、私は少し嬉しくなった。スクリーンの中で、加瀬勉さんがいきなり喋りはじめ

る。「俺たちは…、世の中は変わる。変えることができると思ったんだよ」。農民運

動家として、三里塚闘争のはじめから今日までずっと闘い続けてきた人だ。８０代半

ばになる加瀬さんの自宅には、今も中国革命の指導者、周恩来の大きな写真がかかげ

られていることが、後半、インタビューの場面でわかる。そうだ、１９４９年の中国

革命に続き、１９７５年にはベトナム革命が勝利したあの時代、私たちは、中国やベ

トナムに続き、この日本の地でも革命を起こそうとしていたのだ。（久下格）

Protesting in front of McDonald’s in Shibuya, Tokyo – 9.4 Fast Food Workers Strikes Worldwide

 

 The “Fast Food Workers Strikes” were held in all around the world on the Labor Day in the US (September 4, 2017). In Japan, it was carried out in front of a McDonald’s store in the Shibuya district, Tokyo. KAWAZOE Makoto, the organizer, emphasized the importance of “increasing the minimum wage to 1,500 yen (14 US dollars) per hour”, saying, “People are obliged to work long hours due to low wages. They need to be able to make a living in an eight-hour workday”. The protest attracted many international tourists from Switzerland, Malaysia, the US and Australia partly thanks to a “Ronald McDonald” worn by one of the protesters. According to an Australian, the minimum wage in the country is 15 Australian dollars (1,300 yen), much higher than that in Japan. To our surprise, he is a police officer and a member of the police officers union. When we told him that there is no union for police officers in Japan, he was surprised and said, “Oh, really? 渋谷のマクド前で声あげる～9.4ファストフード労働者世界同時アクション

9月4日、アメリカのレイバーデー（労働者の日）に合わせた「ファストフード労働者

世界同時アクション」が世界各地で開催された。日本では渋谷のマクドナルド店前で

アピール行動が行われた。「賃金が低すぎるから長時間労働を強いられている。これ

をなくすためには8時間でまともに暮らせるようにしなくてはいけない」と、主催者

の河添誠さんは「最賃アップ、時給1500円」の重要性を強調した。さすがに渋谷は国

際都市、ドナルドのピエロ姿が注目され、外国人が次々に寄ってきてシャッターを

切っていた。スイス・マレーシア・カルフォルニア・オーストラリア等々。オースト

ラリア人に話を聞くと、最賃時給は15豪ドル（日本円1300円）で日本より断然高かっ

た。驚いたのはその人は警察官で労組に入っていること。「日本の警察官には組合が

ない」と言うと今度は先方が驚いて「組合ないの？ 組合は必要、大切なものだ」と
