Battle over Japan’s Prime Minister’s visit to the War Shrine: Between Chinese Consul General and Japanese counterpart

HASEGAWA Sumi, a supporter of LaborNet Japan living in Montreal, Canada, told us, “A comment of the Chinese Consul General in Montreal to protest against Japanese Prime Minister ABE Shinzo’s visit to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine was posted in La Presse, a French language daily on January 13, 2014. Four days later, a comment of the Japanese counterpart in the city to refute the Chinese Consul General’s comment was carried in the same paper. I send the Japanese translations of the comments to Labornet Japan”. There, the Chinese strongly protests against  Abe’s visit to the war shrine while referring to the history of the aggression by the Japan’s Imperial Army, and concludes, “Such a tragedy should never be repeated”. The Japanese refutes, “The comment of the Chinese Consul General not only fails to reflect the reality but also lacks objectivity”. He also emphasizes, “Prime Minister Abe’s visit to the shrine was to renew his pledge not to fight a war again”, and “The Japanese Government has always faced the history sincerely and expressed deep remorse and wholehearted apologies about the war. This stance has been strictly kept under the Abe administration”. Let’s see whose claim is more trustworthy.

安倍靖国参拝をめぐって紙上論争～カナダで中国総領事と日本総領事

カナダの読者からレイバーネットに情報が寄せられた。「私の住むモントリオールの仏語の地元紙 La Presse の1月13日号に、駐モントリオール中国総領事が安倍首相の靖国参拝に抗議する文を投稿しました。4日後に駐モントリオール日本総領事がそれに反論する文 を投稿しました。日本語に翻訳しましたので、レイバーネットにも送ります」（カナダ・モントリオール在住 長谷川澄）。この中で、中国総領事は日本軍国主義の凄惨な侵略戦争の歴史を語り、軍国主義のシンボルである靖国参拝に強く抗議し「歴史を繰り返してはいけ ない」と結んでいる。これに対して、日本総領事は「全く真実を反映していないばかりか、客観性にも欠けている」と反論。「参拝の目的は不戦の誓いの決心を新たにするもの」「日本政府はいつも明確に歴史に向き合い、深い悔恨と心からの謝罪を表明してきた。この姿勢は安倍政権の下でも固く守られている」と強調している。果たしてどちらの主張がまともなのか、じっくり読み比べてほしい。
