Study group on the Article 20, Labor Contract Law, targets discriminatory conditions against non-regular workers

A series of workers' study meetings on the Article 20 of Labor Contract Law kicked off in Tokyo on August 2. The revised law, enacted in April last year, prohibits irrational differences in working conditions between permanent and fixed-term employees. Some non-regular workers affiliated with the Metro Commerce local of the National Union of General Workers Tokyo Tobu and Japan Postal Industry Workers Union filed lawsuits at the Tokyo District Court in May this year. The plaintiffs who have long worked at Tokyo subway kiosks and post offices by repeatedly renewing contracts for several months aim at eliminating inequality between working conditions for them and those for regular employees who engage in the same work. The organizing committee of the study group had discussions twice after the revision of the law and launched the meeting series for public- and private-sector workers to understand the article and discuss the ways of cooperation between regular and non-regular workers in the struggle at respective workplaces by utilizing the article.    (By ITO Akinobu)
