Kanagawa City Union General Secretary received Korean Human Rights Award

MURAYAMA Satoshi, general secretary of Kanagawa City Union (photo), won 2015 Human Rights Award bestowed by the Republic of Korea as his long-term support for migrant workers was highly recognized. On April 9, a celebratory banquet was held at Kanagawa Labor Plaza where 150 guests attended.
The conferrer, the Human Rights Committee of Korea, has praised and endowed groups or individuals who have contributed to the promotion and protection of human rights with "the Republic of Korea Human Rights Award" on Dec. 10 every year, the World Human Rights Day. Murayama was the first foreign recipient.
"I counted more than 2,000 Korean workers, who have joined the union, most of whom were overstayers,” he said. “I feel pleased that my activity to protect human rights of workers is finally recognized. I will continue to take an active part of migrant workers' autonomy and human rights.”

“March in March” – Spring labor offensive of migrant workers in Japan

On March 3, 2013, Verceremos, a Chilean song of revolution, sounded in the cold winter air in Tokyo. The “March in March” is an annual labor offensive rally of migrant workers in Japan, which is held at Hibiya Park, central Tokyo. It is joined by workers from Ethiopia, Scotland, Peru, Burma (Myanmar) and South Korea. The slogan of the rally is “Toward harmonious coexistence of people with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds”. The “March in March” has been organized by several trade unions that have many members of migrant workers, such as the Kanagawa City Union, the Zentoitsu Workers Union, the APFS Union and the National Union of General Workers Nambu, and held every year since 2004.

2/16 Tokyo Collective Action: Joint Action Held With Non-Permanent and Foreign Workers

On February 16th, I covered and participated in the Tokyo Collective Action, a joint action involving the unions and individuals in the disputes against the layoffs and attempts to crush unionism. Unions included the Keihin Hotel Union, who had been fighting hotel closure by running the hotel independently of management, and Brazilian workers from the Kanagawa City Union (see photo). Others were also present such as Tsutomu Yoshioka, involved in the dispute against the use of contract workers who do not have the benefits of labor hire workers, Fukuzou Honda, a worker who was laid off during his trial period, and the National Railway Workers, who have been fighting for over 22 years against the privatization of rail. Those involved in the Toyota Philippines dispute also participated. It was an invigorating day and I felt that the global campaign to build joint action between non-permanent and foreign workers was gaining strength in Japan’s labor movement (Reported by Osamu Kimura).
