Protesting in front of McDonald’s in Shibuya, Tokyo – 9.4 Fast Food Workers Strikes Worldwide

 

 The “Fast Food Workers Strikes” were held in all around the world on the Labor Day in the US (September 4, 2017). In Japan, it was carried out in front of a McDonald’s store in the Shibuya district, Tokyo. KAWAZOE Makoto, the organizer, emphasized the importance of “increasing the minimum wage to 1,500 yen (14 US dollars) per hour”, saying, “People are obliged to work long hours due to low wages. They need to be able to make a living in an eight-hour workday”. The protest attracted many international tourists from Switzerland, Malaysia, the US and Australia partly thanks to a “Ronald McDonald” worn by one of the protesters. According to an Australian, the minimum wage in the country is 15 Australian dollars (1,300 yen), much higher than that in Japan. To our surprise, he is a police officer and a member of the police officers union. When we told him that there is no union for police officers in Japan, he was surprised and said, “Oh, really? Union is necessary and important”. (M)

渋谷のマクド前で声あげる～9.4ファストフード労働者世界同時アクション

9月4日、アメリカのレイバーデー（労働者の日）に合わせた「ファストフード労働者

世界同時アクション」が世界各地で開催された。日本では渋谷のマクドナルド店前で

アピール行動が行われた。「賃金が低すぎるから長時間労働を強いられている。これ

をなくすためには8時間でまともに暮らせるようにしなくてはいけない」と、主催者

の河添誠さんは「最賃アップ、時給1500円」の重要性を強調した。さすがに渋谷は国

際都市、ドナルドのピエロ姿が注目され、外国人が次々に寄ってきてシャッターを

切っていた。スイス・マレーシア・カルフォルニア・オーストラリア等々。オースト

ラリア人に話を聞くと、最賃時給は15豪ドル（日本円1300円）で日本より断然高かっ

た。驚いたのはその人は警察官で労組に入っていること。「日本の警察官には組合が

ない」と言うと今度は先方が驚いて「組合ないの？ 組合は必要、大切なものだ」と

Fight for 1500 Yen in Shibuya, Tokyo

April 15^th, low wage workers and union members walked through Shibuya in down town Tokyo, chanting “Decent life and Humane life with an hourly wage of 1500 Yen! “ They distributed flyers designed like bank notes, urging workers to join union to get a wage hike. They stopped in front of a McDonald’s shop to make appeals. A woman hospital worker, who is a member of Sapporo Youth Workers’ Union in Hokkaido, is a regular employee, but her hourly wage in less than 1500 Yen. She appealed her hardships and fears for her future, “The hourly minimum wage in Hokkaido is 764 Yen. The price of Mac burger is the same across the nation. The minimum wage should also be the same nationwide. Annual income of 3 million Yen is a dream for me. When I think of getting married and rearing children in the future, I am desperately anxious.” (Chie Matsumoto)

渋谷センター街で賑やかに ～生活できる賃金を！時給1500円キャンペーン

「あたり前の生活、人間らしい生活を時給１５００円で実現させよう」。そう呼びかけながら低賃金労働者や労働組合が、４月１５日、東京・渋谷のセンター街を練り歩いた。ロナルド・マクドナルドの着ぐるみや、１万円札をデザインしたチラシなどを配布しながら、生活 底上げを実現するには労働組合に加入しようと訴えた。マクドナルドの店舗前でマイクアピール。北海道のさっぽろ青年ユニオンから参加した病院勤務の女性は、正社員だが、時給換算すると１５００円には届かない給料で生活する苦しさを訴えた。「北海道の最低賃金は７６４円。マクドナルドのようなファストフードやコンビニでのおにぎりなどの値段は全国変わらないのに、地方の最低賃金が低いのはおかしい。 年収３００万円は私にとって夢のよう。これから結婚や子育てのことを考えると不安しかない」と将来への不安感を渋谷の街頭で語った。（松元ちえ）
