Protesting in front of McDonald’s in Shibuya, Tokyo – 9.4 Fast Food Workers Strikes Worldwide

 

 The “Fast Food Workers Strikes” were held in all around the world on the Labor Day in the US (September 4, 2017). In Japan, it was carried out in front of a McDonald’s store in the Shibuya district, Tokyo. KAWAZOE Makoto, the organizer, emphasized the importance of “increasing the minimum wage to 1,500 yen (14 US dollars) per hour”, saying, “People are obliged to work long hours due to low wages. They need to be able to make a living in an eight-hour workday”. The protest attracted many international tourists from Switzerland, Malaysia, the US and Australia partly thanks to a “Ronald McDonald” worn by one of the protesters. According to an Australian, the minimum wage in the country is 15 Australian dollars (1,300 yen), much higher than that in Japan. To our surprise, he is a police officer and a member of the police officers union. When we told him that there is no union for police officers in Japan, he was surprised and said, “Oh, really? Union is necessary and important”. (M)

9月4日、アメリカのレイバーデー（労働者の日）に合わせた「ファストフード労働者

世界同時アクション」が世界各地で開催された。日本では渋谷のマクドナルド店前で

アピール行動が行われた。「賃金が低すぎるから長時間労働を強いられている。これ

をなくすためには8時間でまともに暮らせるようにしなくてはいけない」と、主催者

の河添誠さんは「最賃アップ、時給1500円」の重要性を強調した。さすがに渋谷は国

際都市、ドナルドのピエロ姿が注目され、外国人が次々に寄ってきてシャッターを

切っていた。スイス・マレーシア・カルフォルニア・オーストラリア等々。オースト

ラリア人に話を聞くと、最賃時給は15豪ドル（日本円1300円）で日本より断然高かっ

た。驚いたのはその人は警察官で労組に入っていること。「日本の警察官には組合が

ない」と言うと今度は先方が驚いて「組合ないの？ 組合は必要、大切なものだ」と

Global campaign against slave labor at McD’s Fast Food workers gather in Brazil

Fast food workers from all over the world joined the first Fast Food Global Campaign Conference in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In the Conference many reported that McDonald’s, the world second largest enterprise, is using slave labor. The Fast Food Campaign, which started in New York in 2012, is a successor of the Civil Rights Movement. In fact, many of the low wage workers in the industry are African Americans. One of them raised his voice in Brazil, “The work at McD’s is just like the slave work in the cotton fields. The owner is just a single person but the hundreds of slave workers could not resist because they were brain washed. The situation is the same at McD’s. If we raise our voices, there is a danger of being fired. But nothing changes without standing up. Let’s stand up for our rights and live in solidarity with brothers and sisters around the world!” (MATSUMOTO Chie from Sao Paolo)

マックの奴隷労働に対抗する世界運動を！～ファストフード労働者がブラジルに集まる

ブラ ジル・サンパウロ、ブラジリアでファストフード労働者が世界各国から結集して、第1回ファストフードキャンペーン世界会議が開かれた。規模にして世界第2位の企業が、奴隷労働を強いていると多くの当事者から発言があった。2012年にニューヨークからはじまったこの運動は、米国では公民権運動の延長だと言われている。確かに低賃金労働を強いられているのはアフリカ系アメリカ人が多い。「マックでの労働は、 綿花農場で奴隷として働かされていたときとまるで同じ。奴隷の雇い主は一人だけど、雇われている何十人、何百人の奴隷が数では勝っているのに反発しなかったのは洗脳されていたから。マクドナルドでもこの構図は同じだ。声をあげて権利主張すれば首になると脅されているけれど、声をあげなければ何も変わらない。世界の仲間と連帯して権利向上、生活向上のために立ち上がろう」と当事者がブラジルで訴えた。（松元ちえ 8/19サンパウロ）
