A Vietnamese technical intern regrets his coming to Japan

A meeting and a press conference on “nuclear decontamination work” by a Vietnamese technical intern were held at the House of Representative Members’ Building on March 14, 2018. It attracted not only many news reporters including those of some international media but also twelve lawmakers. A Vietnamese technical intern aged 24 came to Japan as an “intern” to learn “construction and civil engineering skills” in 2015. However, what he actually did was “nuclear decontamination work” in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. For fear of exposure, he escaped from the company dormitory and told the fact to the Zentoitsu Workers Union in November 2017, and this issue was exposed. According to him, he had to pay 13,000 US dollars to a “dispatching organization” in Vietnam. Such a debt made him “enslaved”. He says, “I would never have come to Japan if I had known it is so dangerous”. TORII Ippei of Zentoitsu said, “Such cases are rampant under the technical internship system. It is time for Japan to design a system to appropriately accept international interns instead of disguising the current system that causes the enslavement of interns”. (M)

7 children had metastases to their lungs – Report from Fukushima

On January 12, this year's second Friday Action against the restart of nuclear power plants was held  in front of the Office of the Prime Minister. KAMEYA Sachiko (photo), an evacuee from Futaba Town in Fukushima Prefecture, close to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, said that 197 persons are currently suffering from thyroid cancer and recently seven children had metastases to their lungs. The situation has become so serious in just seven years since the nuclear disaster. Then, a woman from Saitama criticized the prefectural assembly dominated by the major Liberal Democratic Party for its adoption of the “Statement to promote the restart of nuclear power plants”. Another speaker from Saitama told the participants how ridiculous the adoption of the statement was by explaining the deliberation in the assembly .
Another participant read a headline of a comment of a high school student in a newspaper, “Humans are powerless before radioactivity”, and finally demanded, “Abe (Japan’s Prime Minister) resign!”  (KINOSHITA Masaaki)
