Kokuro (National Railworkers Union) suggested “falsification” of inspection results: Hokkaido Shimbun

According to an article of the Hokkaido Shimbun, the region’s most largely-circulated paper, on December 21, 2013, the Hokkaido headquarters of Kokuro (National Railworkers Union) already grasped the “falsification” of rail inspection results and requested the management of JR (Japan Rail) Hokkaido to thoroughly investigate the problem at the negotiations between them in 1991, but the latter totally ignored the request. Although the article partially shifted the blame onto the unions about the recent safety flaws of the rail operator, it was still important enough to clarify that the management is to blame for the incidents due to its rejection of the demand from the rail workers who are the most knowledgeable about what is going on in the field.

Let’s make a change from Tokyo to stop Prime Minister Abe’s arrogance: Kickoff meeting for Utsunomiya

UTSUNOMIYA Kenji (photo) energetically appealed, “The Nago mayoral election on January 19, 2014 and the Tokyo gubernatorial one on February 4 are crucial for Japan’s future. It’s time for us to make a change from Tokyo to stop Prime Minister Abe’s arrogance. We are never powerless”. The “Kickoff meeting for Utsunomiya for a new Tokyo” was held at the Toshima Kokaido Hall in central Tokyo on January 8, 2014 and filled with 1,200 participants. MAGOSAKI Ukeru, a critic, enthusiastically said, “Japan is really on the brink of war. The people are facing many negative and dangerous things, such as the restarts of nuclear power plants, TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership), Secrecy Protection Act, change of the Worker Dispatching Act for the worse, and increase in the consumption tax. In particular, nuclear power plants are about to be restarted. Only Utsunomiya can send strong messages against such moves. I would like to totally support him”. (M)

Issue of the removal of“Barefoot Gen” from schools ~ without serious discussions at Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education

Because Tokyo education board was to discuss the petition for the removal of “Barefoot Gen” from schools on Jan. 9, 26 people wanted to sit in on the regular meeting. Six had to give up since there were not enough seats. I, too, drew a blank, but my friend offered me his seat, saying “You will write an observer’s report.” I’d like to thank him for that.
“When someone plays obstructionist, I will order him/her out from here. I will take a legislative action,” The chairperson said again at the beginning of the meeting. “During the previous meeting, I heard a man shout when leaving. That is also an obstructive behavior.” The proceeding is getting worse as the board tries to kick out observers more and more every time. On this day, three petitions were submitted requesting the removal of “Barefoot Gen” from schools, while nine petitions asked to maintain “free access to the book.” In the end, Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education decided that it “cannot accept any of these petitions. I was relieved that the petition for “the removal” was not adopted.

Plaintiffs raged at the State's appeal ~ Osaka Sennan Area Asbestos Case

On Dec. 25, 2013, a landmark ruling was handed down at Osaka High Court to the 58  plaintiffs and 33 aggrieved party (2nd group action) that government was held liable for asbestos-related diseases due to its failure to protect workers from harmful exposures. Finding the decision disagreeable, the state appealed to the Supreme Court on Jan. 7.
"It's really too bad to face the outrageous appeal,” MINAMI Kazuko (photo), one of the plaintiffs, told at the press conference. “For eight years we have been asking the government to take responsibilities for failing to take measures against asbestos exposures. Asbestos can never be taken away, once inhaled. I'm suffering from pulmonic malfunction and feeling seriously ill, but still I managed to come to Tokyo to plead. The ruling by Osaka High Court gave us a moment of relief and delight and now we are stirred to anger. So many plaintiffs are still in distress. I myself feel frustrated and miserable to learn that the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and those ministers who are supposed to secure our life and protect our health give us the cold shoulder. I am quite upset about the deliverance." (By NISHINAKA Seiichiro)
