We will never forgive Toyota that destroyed our family life

Ed Cubelo (left) and Winnie, president and vice president of Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation Workers Association (TMPCWA), came to visit from the Philippines in mid-September to resolve their long-lasting dispute with Toyota. After they went to the automaker’s Aichi headquarters on Sept. 14 and 15 to demand that the world’s largest car company resolve the dispute, they met with the management in Tokyo on Sept. 17.

“It’s been 13 years since our struggle started,” Cubelo told Labornet TV in front of Toyota's Tokyo headquarters. “We believe that we’ve already won this dispute for having struggled for 13 years. Toyota unfairly dismissed us and destroyed our family life. The company should resolve the dispute based on the ILO recommendation. We have launched a campaign “Shame on Toyota” in the Philippines. We have been taking action at Toyota factories, its business partners, Japanese Embassies and any related groups to inform them of this issue.” (Labornet TV) Photo: At Toyota's Tokyo headquarters on Sept. 17.

Toyota is totally a liar – Ed Cubelo

In the evening of September 19, 2012, Ed Cubelo, president of the Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation Workers Association (TWPCWA), and Jason, executive committee member, made a protest action against the motor company in front of its Tokyo Headquarters together with 200 supporters. Before the protest, Cubelo told Toyota officials at the headquarters, “If Toyota advocates ‘human respect’ as a guiding principle, it has to respect workers’ rights and negotiate with them in good faith”. However, Toyota failed again to show any sincerity in its negotiations with the union during the union members’ stay in Japan. At the end of the protest action, all the participants demanded Toyota immediately stop union-busting and withdraw the unfair dismissal of 237 TWCPWA members of eleven years ago. (MT)

Union Mie: Four dispatched workers take JTEKT Co. to the court

Four ex-employees of JTEKT Co., a parts supply maker for Toyota, filed a suit to the Tsu District Court, claiming unfair dismissal. These four workers are members of Union Mie, a community union based on individual affiliation, which is an affiliate of the Japan Community Federation affiliated to Rengo and were employed with a fixed term but were in fact employed under disguised contracting. The company refused the demand by the workers to reinstate, so they went to court. One of the plaintiffs is also demanding compensation for mental damages inflicted by disclosure of his HIV infection to other employees, on which he reported to the company on entering the company.(SAKAI Touru)Photo: Plaintiffs at Tsu District Court

Labor movement driven by young power - Rally takes place for victory of the Hikari Seiko struggle

On April 11, a rally and demonstration took place for the victory of the Hikari Seiko struggle in the city of Kuwana, Mie Prefecture. Hikari Seiko Co., Ltd., a components manufacturer affiliated with Toyota, has been practicing disguised contracting and external assignment. It is now under fire in a dispute over the unfair discharges of 36 workers from abroad in April last year. Forming a big and warm envelope for the Brazilian families including infants and young children, the pep rally was very hot and heartwarming at the same time. Aging of citizens' movements is a familiar phrase, anti-nuclear and pro-peace movement alike. By contrast, the labor movement is driven by the youth! It is only natural for workers' movement to be focused on economic struggles for bread for today. The day has also brought me a thought that we would have tremendous power if this young labour movement and peace movement supported mainly by post-retirement generations could come closer toward each other.

Let’s Meet the Car Company’s Presidents. Holding Them Accountable for Cutting Workers

On June 2, some 50 workers, victims of their dispatching and fixed-term contracts early-termination, and their supporters participated in the Let’s Meet the Car Company’s Presidents Tour. The tour started with such energy that participants managed to burst into the front desk of Mitsubishi Fuso’s head office in Kawasaki (see photo). Afterward, the tour went on to visit the five major car companies including Isuzu, Nissan, and Toyota. At each company, protesters held companies accountable for unreasonably getting rid of non-regular workers, and demanded that the disputes be resolved. Shuto Seinen Union Secretary General Kawaze received live coverage from Hiro Matsumoto, a former member of satirical comed group called Newspaper. The Secretary General said that “These companies have laid workers off, driven them out of their dorms, and left workers by the wayside with no explanation whatsoever”. The companies have continued to reject the union’s requests for collective bargaining. Tour participants included JIMU and Hino Motors Union among others. (Written by Chie Matsumoto).

Why silent, Mitarai-san -- Open letter at Keidanren’s new-year party

Eight trade unions, leading ex-dispatched workers who were dismissed before their contracts would terminate, tried to present an “open letter” to Mitarai Fujio, president of Kendanren (Japan Federation of Economic Organizations) in the afternoon of January 6, 2009. The question was, “Why are you silent despite an increase in social instability as a result of the harsh dismissal of temporary and dispatched workers by Keidanren member companies, such as Canon and Toyota, while people and local governments are working hard to tackle the problem?” The demonstrators visited Hotel New Otani, where the federation’s new-year party was held. The lobby of the hotel was filled with more than a hundred persons including news reporters, making the hotel upset. The confusion continued as Keidanren refused to receive the letter, but it was finally settled down when the hotel decided to keep it. Mr. Mitarai hopefully felt the anger of the dismissed closely.
