Tokyo Disneyland performers stand up against lay off

On October 31st, Oriental Land Workers’ Union, a local of Nanohana Union, held a informational picket in front of main office of the Oriental Land Co. which operates Tokyo Disneyland. The action has been held every Monday and Friday since February 2014. Workers who were working at Disneyland as performers for 7 to 17 years were laid off by a subcontractor. They formed a union and demanded direct employment at Disneyland. Oriental Land Co. refuses to sit at the bargaining table, claiming that the company has no direct employment relations with the workers. Union president Hamamoto said “We were laid off when the show was over. The company rejected us saying that they have no responsibility as employers”.(TSUCHIYA Tokachi)
