Union Members Reinstated at Pacific Beach Hotel

A worker struggle that lasted for more than a decade at Pacific Beach Hotel in Hawaii came to a happy end on Jan. 14, 2013. Dismissed union members were reinstated after the National Labor Relations Board gave the Waikiki company an order. Since the majority of hotel’s clientele was Japanese, AFL-CIO and the International Longshoremen & Warehouse Workers Union requested Japan’s largest confederation Rengo, International Transport Federation, Japanese Council of Transport Worker’s Unions, The International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations (IUF), IUF-JCC, Japan Federation of Service and Distributive Workers Unions, All Japan Dockworkers’ Union, Zenkoku-Kowan and Labor Now for support. Though the struggle ended up in an extended dispute, it became a successful international solidarity work. (By TAKASU Hirohiko)
