HASHIMOTO Toru, mayor of Osaka City,
proposed an “ordinance bill to restrict political activities of city workers”
on July 6, 2012. If the bill is passed, the city workers are totally prevented
from taking part in political activities, and dismissed if they do not follow
the bill. At a press conference, Mr. Hashimoto says, “Public workers’ confrontation
with a politician is absolutely unacceptable”. In other words, if a city worker
is critical of Mr. Hashimoto, the worker will be fired. The bill is really
repressive and undemocratic. According to the bill, such activities of Osaka
City workers as joining a demonstration, criticizing the mayor at a rally
and/or satirizing are subjected to dismissal. My appearance on LaborNet TV
possibly results in punitive dismissal. This is such a grim situation faced by Osaka
City workers now. We, the city workers, would like to be in solidarity with as
many citizens as possible to turn back this negative tide. (YANO Koichi, member
