On January 18, 2014, an international
symposium was held at Sophia University in central Tokyo with a special guest
speaker Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!. Goodman clearly said, referring to
her own media movement that started from a radio station in 1996, “Independent
media plays very important roles in democracy. This is because people can raise
their voice by themselves without depending on the mainstream media. Their
experiences and stories have the strongest impacts. Thus, it is possible for us
to eliminate discrimination and war”. The story about her coverage and report
of the massacre in East Timor was exciting. According to her, the report resulted
in the stop of the massacre. MATSUMOTO Chie, a staff of LaborNet TV, introduced
how a strike of Tokyo Metro kiosk staffs was reported. “We did it while most of
the mainstream media ignored their struggle. What they got from their strike
was not necessarily big, but their struggle spread and was shared with more and
more people sympathizing and being encouraged”. On this day, heated discussions

民衆自身が声を上げる強さ～エイミー・グッドマン「独立系メディア」を語る
1 月18日、東京・上智大学で「デモクラシー・ナウ!」放送局のエイミー・グッドマンを招いた国際シンポジウムが開催された。エイミーは1996年にラジオ局からスタートした自らの「メディア運動」を振り返りながら、こう断言した。「独立系メディアが民主主義に果たす役割は大きい。マスコミが報道しなくても民衆自身で声を上げることができるからだ。民衆が自分の体験・ストーリーを語ることほど強力なことはない。このことで、差別・戦争などを徐々に壊していくことができる」。東チモールの大量虐殺事件を命がけで取材し、世界に報道した話はスリリングだった。それによって虐殺が止まったという。またレイバーネットTVの松元ちえさんも登壇し、東京メトロ売店のストライキ報道事例を紹介した。「ほとんどのマスコミは無視したが私たちが伝えた。ストは小さな成果だったが、それを伝え共有することで、共感の輪と元気が広がった」。この日は終日、メディアと民主主義をめぐる熱い議論が続いた。（M）
