Protest Letter by the Okinawa Mass Media Unions

“In the early morning of July 22th, the Japanese government deployed 500 riot police from across the nation to evict the sit-in protesters in Takae, Okinawa. The citizens were opposing the construction of a helipad for the US Marines. In addition, there was an incident in which the freedom of press was violated by the police. On August 20^th, reporters from Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times were removed from the site by the police while they were reporting the protest action. They declared their names and identity, but the riot police refused to free them. This incident violates the basic freedom of the press by suppressing our effort to cover the scene and deliver the information to the public. It is also a reprehensible abuse of  state power in an effort to hide anything unfavorable.”

沖縄マスコミ労組が声明 : 東村高江のヘリパッド強行建設と報道

の自由侵害に抗議

２０１６年７月２２日まだ夜も明けきらない早朝、政府は約５００

人とも言われる圧倒的な数の機動隊を全国から配備し、東村高江の

ヘリパッド建設に反対する住民や市民グループを強制的に排除し

た。こうした中、報道の自由までもが公権力によって奪われるとい

う、あってはならないことが起きた。８月２０日、抗議活動を取材

中の琉球新報の記者と沖縄タイムスの記者が機動隊によって強制排

除され、機動隊員の人垣と車両の間に閉じ込められ取材機会が奪わ

れた。記者は身分を明らかにし、会社名を訴えたにも関わらず、解

放しなかった。現場で起きていることを正当に記録し、伝えていく

という使命を全うする我々を力で抑え込み、国家権力が都合の悪い

ことを隠し、報道の自由の根幹を侵害する許し難い行為である。報

道の自由を脅かす行為は、工事再開の日も行われている。県が管理

する県道を、警察が一方的に封鎖し、反対する住民に限らず、一般

に往来する人に加え、我々マスコミも対象となった。

Statement of Japan Federation of News Paper Workers Unions on the remark by Hyakuta Naoki

The Japan Federation of News Paper Workers Unions strongly protests the remark by the writer, HYAKUTA Naoki, as an attempt to suppress　the mass media and a violation to the freedom of press. His remark was made on June 15^th at a study session of junior LDP diet members promoting the revision of the Japanese constitution. According to the press, when asked to comment on the allegation that local newspapers in Okinawa are critical of the national government, Hyakuta replied, “the two local newspapers in Okinawa ought to be shut down. I don’t want it to happen, but if one of the islands in Okinawa were occupied by China, then the people of Okinawa would wake up.” Individuals have the right to say what they want and we sincerely accept  different opinions as well as criticism of the press. But we cannot overlook this remark since Hyakuta was a board member of NHK until this February and is still a public figure involved in the media. Moreover, his remark was made in a lecture to over 40 diet members. (Statement of Japan Federation of News Paper Workers Unions )

百田尚樹氏と自民党国会議員の発言に抗議～新聞労連が怒りの声明

憲法改正を推進する自民党若手議員が集まった２５日の勉強会で、作家の百田尚樹氏が沖縄の地元紙を「つぶさないといけない」と発言したことに、新聞労連は 「新聞メディアへの弾圧であり、報道の自由への侵害だ」として強く抗議する。報道によると、沖縄県の地元紙が政府に批判的だとの意見に対し、百田氏は「沖縄の二つの新聞はつぶさないといけない。あってはいけないことだが、沖縄のどこかの島が中国に取られれば目を覚ますはずだ」と主張した。個人の発言は自由であり、新聞への批判や異なる主張について我々は真摯に受け止める。しかし百田氏は今年２月までＮＨＫの経営委員を務めるなど、メディアに関わってきた人物であり、約４０人の国会議員が集まる場で講師として発言している以上、看過するわけにはいかない。（新聞労連の声明より）
