Labor Film Festa draws 300 with movies about people raising their voices

The Labor Film Festa ended in success on July 22 with more than 300 people coming to see eight new releases with “Hyoteki no shima (The Targeted Island)~Kaji Takata” as the main feature. The festa also featured films produced by young people on social and historical issues of Japan. Students at Keisen University showed their work, “Our field study~Okinawa, Cheju, Taiwan,” illustrated the importance of learning history first-hand. “Genpatsu no machi wo owarete 3 (Driven out of a nuclear village 3)” drew tears out of audience as it touched the hearts of the people through telling a story about a cattle herder. UNUMA Hisae, one of the Fukushima residents featured in the film, conveyed to the audience how much they lost in the nuclear disaster. “I don’t want you to create another Futaba. That’s what I want to tell you,” Unuma said onstage after the film screening. “The day Conspiracy bill passed” was about Soka Gakkai and the dilemma in the protest against the conspiracy act. “The organization is becoming more unreasonable,” a member and film producer said. “I was reprimanded for speaking up, but I am not going to give up until I can make the changes.” Someone said that the Labor Film Festa was “a movie festival of ‘those people,’” but each film portrayed citizens standing up and speaking up against unreasonable situations in this country. Labor Film Festa touches hearts of 320

The annual labor film festa drew 320 people on July 23. Many said they felt encouraged by the movies that were screened. Here is a comment from someone who enjoyed the festa:
“I never regret coming to see the films, but this year especially, every film shown resonated in our hearts. ‘Pride’ was a very warm film, where gay and mine workers join hands in their struggle. Since we struggle against the government and the police daily, it was such an encouragement. ‘The bomb buried’ helped me understand the damages asbestos caused. I knew there are still many victims, but I thought it was something of the past. I was surprised to see that not all asbestos have been eradicated.

More than 300 attend Labor Film Festa

This year’s Labor Film Festa, which featured five labor-related movies, ended in huge success on July 25 with some 330 people attending.
The audience was struck by the film, “Another promise,” which tells a story about a father fighting against a South-Korean mega corporation Samsung. Most people came out of the theater in tears. Four other documentary films, “In the name of the Emperor,” “Standing Army,” “Workers’ Republic” and “Metro Lady Blues 3,” were also received well.
The event highlighted workers featured in the “Metro Lady Blues 3” who work at Tokyo subway kiosks.
Comments and reviews of the event said: “We can see history from here,” “I see why it is important to raise our voices in solidarity,” and “I was shaken by all the movies that were intense.” (By M)
