Let’s get connected with students and young people! ~ Ouchi Hirokazu speaks at ‘Hinomaru and Kimigayo’ gathering

It’s been 13 years since the Tokyo metropolitan government began enforcing the “Hinomaru (national flag raising) and Kimigayo (singing of the national anthem)” at public schools in Tokyo. A gathering against this enforcement was held in Suginami Ward in Tokyo on Feb. 13. The meeting, which was promoted by a Tokyo network against the board of education, drew about 100 people.
At first, OUCHI Hirokazu, Chukyo University professor (see photo), gave a lecture titled,  “Security legislation and Education.” Ouchi, who has shined a light on abuses against part-timers and led the movement to tackle issues surrounding student loan, pointed out that it is important to think about anti-security legislation and poverty together.
He said, “neo-liberalism have driven income gap and poverty to the worst level. About half of young people live under 3 million yen a year. The number of workers who cannot afford to live is increasing. It is necessary to criticize impoverishment as well as dismantling of constitutionalism. In short, a movement that brings power shift to the relationship between wage labor and capital is being sought.

Four students wage indefinite hunger strike

Four students are waging an indefinite hunger strike against the security bills and the Abe Cabinet. They started their action in front of the Upper House Members Building at 2 p.m. August 27th. 80 supporters and reporters gathered for the kick-off. The four students will take only water and salt and will sleep-in during the night. Each expressed their resolve: SHIMANE Kenji from Sensyu University said, “Anger against the security bills urged me into a hunger strike. I strongly refuse to take part in war.” Ida Takashi from Jochi University said, “Post-war Japan was peaceful, but was indirectly involved in the war in Korean, Vietnam and Iraq. I want to re-examine the history of peace and war in these 70 years after WWⅡ.” MOTOKI Daisuke from Sensyu University said, “ I have been fighting against the construction of Henoko Base in Okinawa. If we allow the security bills to be enacted, more burdens will fall on the people of Okinawa. I want to show the will of the people by direct action.” (SASAKI Yumi)

A group of students rise up, voicing opposition to constitutional amendment

I took to the streets as usual to join the ongoing Anti-Nuclear Friday Action around the Diet periphery on June 12. Many were chanting slogans or holding up their boards with their own original assertion in various styles.
On the other side of the speaker's corner in front of the main gate of the Diet, I found a group of students making a speech and crying out, "No Security Bills!" or "Protect the Constitution!" I was so impressed to see students finally standing up.
Since three constitutional scholars declared that the security bills are unconstitutional, we have heard people say that the tide had turned. The Friday night, when I heard students making an outcry " No to Abe government," I realized something had changed. (By KINOSHITA Masaaki).
