More than 200 people came together to commemorate war-time sex
slaves on Aug. 14 in Tokyo. The event called, “Talk & Concert ~International Memorial Day for Comfort Women,” was organized by Japan
Network against Wartime Sexual Violence to mark the day when a Korean woman Kim
Hak-sun, breaking half a century of silence in 1991, came out as a victim of
the sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army. Her courageous protest against
the slavery encouraged other victims in various regions in Asia to bring
charges against the Japanese government. The day was designated as International
Memorial Day for Comfort Women at the 11th Asian Solidarity
Conference held in Taipei in December, 2012, to remember the history of the victimization
and people’s struggle against the injustice. (SATO Kazuyuki)
