Phone consultation on bladder cancer cases held by Chemical General Workers’ Union

On December 21^st, two workers at the Sansei Chemical Industry Co. held a press conference to criticize the company for neglect of workers’ health and safety. The company is a manufacturer of paint and dye and uses o-toluidine, which is known to cause bladder cancer. The workers revealed that they were suffering bladder cancer and were applying for workers’ accident compensation. The press conference held at Fukui Prefectural Government building was organized by the Chemical General Workers’ Union, Kansai District Council. The union is setting up a phone consultation service for victimized workers. The cancer-causing chemical is not regulated by the Industrial Safety and Health Act as a carcinogenic chemical. The union criticized the company for using the chemical without taking safety measures, although they knew that it was a toxic chemical.

膀胱がん多発事件 : 化学一般関西地本が電話相談を開始

12月21日、福井県庁で、三星化学工業の被災労働者が、労働組合である化学一般関西地本が主催した記者会見に臨み、労働現場の実態や会社側の安全と健康を軽視したこれまでの対応を批判した。化学一般関西地本では、電話による相談を呼びかけている。問題の物質として、名前のあがっている、オルトートルイジンな どの芳香族アミンの問題は、有機則や特化則の規制対象物質とされてこなかったことから、有害物質を使用しながら「法律を守っている」という企業側に安易な 口実を与えてきた規制制度そのものの問題点を、またしても露呈した事件だ。つまり、有害物質と知りながら、杜撰な防護対策をとっても規制も指導も受けることなく、使用を続けてきた企業は多いことは確実だ。（関西労働者安全センター・片岡明彦）
