People gathered and demonstrated in Tokyo on Sept. 28 to call on the Japanese government to obey the recommendations issued by the UN Human Rights Committee. The recommendations and evaluations were issued in July for 19 categories of the Japanese society including death penalty, secrecy law, hate speech and “comfort women.” In August, the UN Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination expressed concerns and issued recommendations for 30 categories. This is the proof that the international community perceives Japan as a developing nation in human rights issues.
“Japan never creates a policy on how to protect human rights,” TERANAKA Makoto of Amnesty International said. “It shuts its eyes and closes its ears to the calls from the international community. We must call on our government to make laws for the victims.” (By OZAWA Kuniko)
